It depends... the clutch in my pickup is wonderful and mindless. I love it. Clutch in my Celica... seems to require precise everything.

Not a lot of interesting Toyotas lately locally. Sudden surplus of SC400s, though.

My roommate has a two door automatic, they work quite well.

But you also live in the PNW. I’m a Rust Belter. Rust free XJ 2 doors are rare as Hen’s teeth at a reasonable price here.

Well, we can’t expect you to be completely brand loyal. Honestly I don’t get it.
I mean I like Toyota, and the next car I will buy will likely be a neat Toyota (last gen MR2, Tacoma, Pickup, Celica like yours (quite a few by me for sale quite often)). But I drive a Ranger now, and I like it ok. I could empty my savings buying a basket case Tacoma like my old one (I will never find a $2750 Tacoma in the same condition as mine). But I’m not a super crazy Toyota guy.
If anything I’m a Mopar guy, but I don’t see a FCA purchase any time in the distant or near future. I’ll keep the Dart forever, and maybe someday pick up another A body to make a race car.

I know several people who seemingly know what they’re talking about and they say autos are better for offroad.
Me? I know nothing about leaving pavement.
I do know that these were probably the last good jeeps though.

Well I would automatically say no. I would do a little more manual labor and get the real Heep experience.

I don’t think I’ve seen a rust free 2-door XJ since high school.

Lies - that 4.0L definitely has an oil leak somewhere. It is a Jeep after all.
Also, the AW4 automatic is a decent transmission - probably one of the better ones to go in a Jeep.

A friend got one of these and it ended up having too many problems. It was a two door.

Seems like a pretty solid price. It’s he right combo, don’t see too many 2 door 4.0 4WD models.
It’s actually really decent automatic in there
The only real issue I have with them is the people who drive them. It’s either dumb kids who lift the hell out of them and give them LED light bars and Rockstar wheels, or Jeep elitists who think every other Jeep on the road is inferior in every way and modern jeeps are absolute shit and can’t do anything like an old one (even though he just daily drives his and has never once done anything with it)

I don’t believe that a 230k mile 4.0 doesn’t leak oil, and that makes me a little suspicious of the rest of it. Although it could mean that the owner was very meticulous about maintenance. I’ve also never paid that much for an XJ, but I’m just a cheap bastard.
